BHEL Signs Technology Transfer Deal for Naval Stealth System
BHEL signed a Transfer of Technology agreement with NSTL (a DRDO lab) for the LM2500 Gas Turbine Infrared Suppression System used to improve the stealth of Indian Navy ships, supporting Make in India.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) signed a Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT) with the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL). The agreement is for the LM2500 Gas Turbine Infrared Suppression System, which is used on naval ships.
An infrared suppression system reduces the heat signature given off by a warship's engine exhaust. Lowering this heat makes the ship harder to detect and target with heat-seeking missiles, which improves its stealth and survivability during operations at sea.
Under the agreement, BHEL will handle the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of the system for use on Indian Navy ships. The technology was developed in India under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
This collaboration supports the Make in India initiative and promotes self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in advanced defence technology. For aspirants, the key facts are the two parties (BHEL and NSTL, a DRDO laboratory) and the purpose of the system (reducing infrared signature for naval stealth).
Key Points to Remember
