BRICS Anti-Drug Agencies Meet in Guwahati to Tackle Transnational Drug Trafficking

The two-day BRICS Heads of Anti-Drug Agencies’ Meeting 2026 commenced in Guwahati on July 6, 2026, bringing together top officials from member nations to address growing concerns over drug trafficking. The gathering marks the first time India has hosted this high-level forum, underscoring its growing role in global drug control efforts. Delegates from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Indonesia participated in discussions focused on cross-border narcotics challenges.

The meeting was held against the backdrop of increasing use of digital platforms for drug trade, including darknet marketplaces and cryptocurrency-based transactions. India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) highlighted that rising youth involvement in drug abuse has made coordinated international action essential. The agenda includes strategies to combat synthetic drugs, prevent diversion of precursor chemicals, and improve intelligence sharing and operational coordination among national agencies.

The significance of the meeting lies in strengthening institutional mechanisms within BRICS to counter transnational drug networks. With member states representing nearly half the world’s population and over 40% of global GDP, the group’s collective action could significantly disrupt drug supply chains. Enhanced cooperation may also lead to joint operations, standardised legal frameworks, and better training for enforcement personnel across regions.

India’s hosting of the event reflects its commitment to multilateral security cooperation. As a major transit and destination country for narcotics, India stands to benefit from improved regional intelligence and faster response mechanisms. The focus on maritime routes and digital platforms aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to modernise its border and cyber security infrastructure.

The meeting underscores how drug trafficking intersects with national security, youth welfare, and digital crime. Aspirants must understand how international bodies like BRICS are evolving beyond economic cooperation to include security and law enforcement collaboration.
