Ebola outbreak in Africa: India steps up surveillance but reports no confirmed cases
India has stepped up airport screening and activated isolation wards after the WHO declared the Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 16 May 2026. No confirmed case has been reported in India so far.
An outbreak of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda has triggered a global health alert, prompting India to raise its surveillance posture even though no confirmed case has been reported in the country so far. The current outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, first identified in Uganda’s Bundibugyo district in 2007.
Reports from the affected region suggest close to 900 to 1,000 suspected cases in the DRC, more than 100 confirmed infections, and over 200 suspected deaths. Uganda has confirmed seven cases and one death linked to cross-border transmission. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 16 May 2026. There is no licensed vaccine or approved targeted antiviral treatment for this strain at present.
In India, two suspected cases have drawn attention. One was in Bengaluru, involving a traveller from Uganda, and another is under observation in Gujarat. The Bengaluru sample is reported to have tested negative on PCR at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune. A second PCR may be needed for final confirmation. Public health experts have stressed that suspected cases are part of normal surveillance and should not be confused with confirmed infections.
Ebola is a viral haemorrhagic disease with a historical fatality rate of 25 to 90 per cent. Unlike flu or COVID-19, Ebola is not casually airborne. It spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids, contaminated medical equipment, unsafe caregiving and certain burial practices. Brief shared airspace or casual social contact does not transmit the virus.
India has stepped up airport screening, activated isolation wards in some states including Gujarat, and issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for hospitals, laboratories, infection control, sample handling and traveller monitoring. The Health Ministry has also sent emergency supplies and medical assistance to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), continuing the Vaccine Maitri approach used during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Globally, the outbreak is being made harder to control because parts of the DRC are facing conflict, displacement and weak health infrastructure. Attacks on health facilities, mistrust of authorities and the spread of rumours have driven some patients away from treatment centres. The lesson for India is that preparedness must be steady and continuous; it cannot wait until community transmission begins.
The author of the original commentary, a public health expert, advised the public to follow official advisories, avoid spreading rumours on social media, refrain from stigmatising travellers or African nationals, and seek medical care promptly if symptoms appear after travel from affected regions. India, the commentary concludes, should stay alert, but not alarmed.
