The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has announced the setting up of its first international deep-tech centre in Menlo Park, California, with a planned investment of US$ 7.5 million. The plan was shared at the SelectUSA Investment Summit.
The centre aims to help Indian deep-tech startups by giving them access to mentorship, funding and global markets. It is being developed in partnership with CA Startups and is meant to support translational research, innovation and the exchange of talent across countries.
'Deep-tech' refers to startups built on advanced science and engineering, such as artificial intelligence, robotics and new materials, rather than simple apps or services.
IIT Madras, set up in 1959 with support from West Germany and located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is one of India's top engineering and research institutions. For aspirants, this shows how Indian institutions are expanding their global research footprint.
