India Hosts ISO Space Systems Subcommittee Meetings for the First Time

India hosted the ISO TC 20/SC 14 international subcommittee meetings on space systems and operations for the first time on 8 May 2026 in New Delhi. ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, sets common technical standards that countries and companies follow. The TC 20/SC 14 subcommittee deals specifically with standards for space systems and their operations.

The meetings were organised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India's national standards body, at the Bharat Mandapam. They were attended by 131 delegates representing 13 countries, making it an important international gathering on space-related standards.

The discussions focused on building global standards for mission safety, interoperability (the ability of different systems to work together) and the reduction of space debris, which is the leftover junk from old satellites and rockets that can damage active spacecraft. Experts from ISRO and several international space agencies took part in the talks.

The event also showcased India's fast-growing private space sector, which has been encouraged by IN-SPACe policy reforms. By hosting these meetings for the first time, India strengthened its role in shaping global space governance and technological cooperation, a topic of high importance for science and technology questions in competitive exams.
