India has carried out Mission STRATO-XI, a near-space technology demonstration that showcased the country's first demonstration of air-breathing cold plasma propulsion in the stratosphere. The mission was launched from a stadium in Vijayawada and was described by the Union Minister for Civil Aviation as a landmark achievement for Indian space technology.

The demonstration was carried out by Raudranex Space Technologies, a Visakhapatnam-based space-tech startup incubated by the Andhra Pradesh Innovation Society, in partnership with Red Balloon Aerospace, a deep-tech startup based in Mangalagiri. A super-pressure balloon used in the mission can travel up to about 25 km above the earth, offering opportunities for research and testing across many industries.

The Minister highlighted that space technology is already creating benefits for farmers, businesses and ordinary citizens across several sectors. He also pointed to Andhra Pradesh's plans, including an Aerospace and Defence Policy and the development of a 'Space City' at Sriharikota, to strengthen the state's space ecosystem.

The mission is notable because it was driven by private startups working with state-backed incubation support, reflecting the growing role of private players in India's space sector.

For exam aspirants, this demonstrates the rise of India's private space-tech industry, the use of near-space balloon platforms, and new propulsion technologies — all useful current-affairs points for the science and technology section.
