The Indian Navy inaugurated its premier Naval Sailing Node at the Upper Lake, also called Bhojtal, in Bhopal on 17 May 2026. The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, presided over the opening ceremony of the new facility.
The centre is built to support advanced training for the Indian Navy Sailing Team as well as its rowing, canoeing and kayaking teams. National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets will also train here, giving young people early exposure to water sports and defence-linked activities.
The project supports India’s National Sports Policy by offering world-class training and encouraging youth to take up sports and consider careers in the armed forces. The lake itself is important for the environment — Bhojtal is part of the Bhoj Wetland, which is listed under the international Ramsar Convention for the protection of wetlands.
For exam aspirants, the key takeaways are the location (Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh), the head of the Navy, and the Ramsar tag of the Bhoj Wetland.
