India's First Urban Testbed and Aerosol Observatory Set Up in Chennai
The Ministry of Earth Sciences has set up India's first Urban Testbed and Aerosol Observatory in Chennai, built by IITM and CASRI, to improve weather forecasting and aerosol-climate research under Mission Mausam.
India's first comprehensive Urban Testbed and Aerosol Observatory has been set up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. An aerosol is a tiny solid or liquid particle suspended in the air, such as dust, smoke or sea salt, which affects air quality and climate.
The observatory was established by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) along with the Centre for Atmospheric Science Research and Innovation (CASRI). It is fitted with advanced instruments, weather stations and X-band radars.
The facility will monitor atmospheric conditions, aerosols, rainfall patterns and thermodynamic changes. The data collected is meant to improve short-term weather forecasting and to study how aerosols influence climate change.
The project is part of the wider Mission Mausam, India's programme to strengthen weather and climate research. Better forecasting helps in disaster preparedness, agriculture planning and managing air pollution in cities.
