Lioness Attacks Man in Gujarat’s Garajiya Village on July 6, 2026
A lioness attacked and pinned a Maldhari man in Gujarat’s Garajiya village on July 6, 2026, before releasing him. The incident, captured on video, reflects rising human-wildlife conflict in the Greater Gir region.
On July 6, 2026, a lioness attacked a man on a village road in Garajiya, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, and pinned him down for several minutes before releasing him. The incident was captured on video and circulated widely on social media. The footage shows the man, later identified as Kalubhai Parmar, a member of the Maldhari community, lying still near a parked pickup truck while the lioness kept him restrained. At one point, he gently touched the animal, likely to avoid provoking it further. Villagers shouted and threw stones but did not approach due to fear.
The attack occurred in the morning hours, following the lioness’s movement from the Dharwada area near Sonpari village, where she had hunted prey on July 5. The forest department confirmed she had entered Garajiya village, which lies within her known movement corridor. Officials said she attempted to flee after the attack and injured another person during her escape. The injured man was treated at a government hospital in Palitana and later transferred to Bhavnagar, where he is now out of danger.
The forest department commended Kalubhai Parmar for his composure and courage during the attack, stating that his calm behaviour prevented the situation from worsening. The department has launched a capture operation for the lioness and urged the public not to approach or harass her. They also emphasized that any sighting must be reported immediately to avoid further conflict. The incident follows five human deaths linked to lion attacks in June 2026, including two under investigation.
This event highlights growing human-wildlife conflict in the Greater Gir landscape, where the Asiatic lion population has risen to 891 as per the 2025 census. Experts cite factors such as lion dispersal beyond core protected areas, illegal wildlife shows, human encroachment near forests, and delayed monsoon conditions that have increased animal stress and aggression. The Maldhari community has long coexisted with lions, but expanding settlements and shrinking buffers are increasing contact incidents.
The forest department has reiterated that the lion population’s growth is a conservation success but now demands stronger management strategies to ensure safety for both people and animals. Measures include habitat expansion, community awareness, and rapid response teams to handle future encounters.
