L&T Partners France's Exail for Indian Navy's Unmanned Mine Counter-Measure System
L&T tied up with France's Exail on 18 May 2026 to build an Unmanned Mine Counter-Measure suite for the Indian Navy. Linked to India's plan for 12 Mine Counter Measure Vessels, the autonomous system detects and neutralises sea mines from a safe distance.
On 18 May 2026, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) signed a strategic partnership with France-based Exail to provide an advanced Unmanned Mine Counter-Measure (MCM) Suite for the Indian Navy. Under the deal, L&T will act as the prime contractor while Exail supplies the key technology.
The project is linked to India's planned purchase of 12 Mine Counter Measure Vessels, which are meant to strengthen the Navy's ability to protect sea lanes and ports.
The autonomous system can detect, classify, identify and neutralise underwater mines from a safe stand-off distance. This means the threat can be cleared while keeping ships and crews away from danger.
For exam aspirants: mine counter-measures are operations to find and destroy sea mines that can damage or sink ships. The partnership also reflects India's push for modern naval defence and greater indigenous participation in advanced military technology under 'Make in India' in defence.
