The Mahey Tokpo-Raldho irrigation canal was inaugurated in the Union Territory of Ladakh on 15 May 2026 by the Lieutenant Governor. The canal is located in the high-altitude Changthang area at a height of over 14,000 feet, and it has been built to deal with the long-standing problem of water shortage in this cold desert region.

The canal stretches about 2.10 kilometres and draws water from Yaya Lake. It is designed to provide irrigation to nearly 100 acres of farmland in the Mahey area. In a region where farming is difficult because of the harsh climate and limited water, such a canal can make a big difference to local agriculture.

Along with the canal's opening, a plantation drive to plant 15,000 trees was also held. The aim of the plantation is to stabilise slopes and protect the soil in this ecologically sensitive Himalayan area, where land can erode easily.

For exam aspirants, the points to note are that the canal is in the Changthang region of Ladakh, that it draws water from Yaya Lake, and that Ladakh is a Union Territory administered by a Lieutenant Governor.
