The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 17 May 2026. A PHEIC is the highest level of global health alert that the WHO can issue.

The outbreak began in the mining region of Mongwalu in the Ituri province of the DRC and later spread to the capital cities Kinshasa and Kampala. It involved the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment.

The WHO recommended emergency management steps, screening at borders and temporary travel restrictions for people who may have been exposed, in order to stop the deadly virus from spreading further.

For exam aspirants, the key concepts are what a PHEIC means, the role of the WHO, and the fact that Ebola spreads mainly through contact with the body fluids of infected people and animals.
