Vacancy Details
A total of 11,127 posts of Assistant Loco Pilot are open across all Railway Recruitment Boards and zonal railways. Vacancies are distributed across UR, SC, ST, OBC, and EWS categories. Ex-Servicemen vacancies are within the total count, not additional. The post is not suitable for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. Complete RRB and zone-wise details are in the official notification.
Eligibility
Education: Matriculation plus an ITI, OR a Diploma or Degree in Engineering, from a recognised board, university, or institute. Candidates awaiting their final qualifying result are not eligible.
Age: 18 to 30 years as on 01-07-2026. Age relaxation applies to various categories; only the maximum single relaxation is granted. There is no limit on the number of attempts within the upper age limit.
Medical: The post carries Medical Standard A-1, with strict vision requirements. Candidates who have had Lasik or any corrective eye surgery are not eligible.
Application Fee
The recruitment fee is paid online only through net banking, debit/credit cards, or UPI, and is non-refundable at the time of payment. However, candidates who appear in CBT-1 receive a refund of their examination fee (after bank charges) into their Aadhaar-seeded bank account. Candidates whose applications are rejected, or who do not appear in CBT-1, get no refund.
How to Apply
- Apply online only through the official website of your chosen Railway Recruitment Board (the RRB list is in the notification).
- Create an account on the RRB portal; those who created accounts for 2024/2025 notices may reuse the same credentials. The chosen RRB, mobile number, and email cannot be changed after account creation. Aadhaar or DigiLocker authentication is advised.
- Fill the application; a live photograph is captured during the process.
- Pay the fee online and submit before 14-06-2026 (11:59 PM). Apply to only one RRB — multiple applications cause rejection of all of them and debarment.
Selection Process
Selection has five stages: First Stage CBT (CBT-1), Second Stage CBT (CBT-2), Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), Document Verification, and Medical Examination. CBT-1 is only a screening test and its marks are not counted in the final panel. The final merit list is prepared RRB-wise giving 50% weightage to Part-A of CBT-2 and 50% to the CBAT score. There is a negative marking of one-third mark per wrong answer in both CBTs, but none in CBAT.
Syllabus & Exam Pattern
CBT-2 Part-A: Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and Basic Science and Engineering (Engineering Drawing, Units, Measurements, Basic Electricity, Levers, IT Literacy, and similar topics). CBT-2 Part-B: A trade-wise qualifying test.
