Amit Garg Appointed Director of NCRB, Alok Kumar Mittal to Lead BPRD

On June 27, 2026, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) announced the appointment of three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to key positions in the country’s police administration. Amit Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in New Delhi. He will serve until October 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever comes first. The post has been temporarily upgraded to the Director General (DG) level for him on a personal basis.

Alok Kumar Mittal, also a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), an organisation under the Ministry of Home Affairs. His tenure will last until June 30, 2029, which is the date of his retirement. Mittal is currently posted with the Haryana government. He will oversee research, policy formulation, and training initiatives for police forces across India.

Sujeet Pandey, a 1994-batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed to replace Amit Garg as the Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad. Pandey will hold the position until July 31, 2028, the date of his retirement. The SVPNPA is responsible for training newly selected IPS officers and conducting advanced courses for serving police personnel.

These appointments are part of a broader effort to strengthen institutional leadership in India’s law enforcement framework. The NCRB plays a critical role in maintaining national crime data and supporting criminal justice systems, while the BPRD drives policy reforms and capacity building in policing. The SVPNPA ensures that police officers are equipped with modern training and leadership skills.
