The Assam cabinet has approved the draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, with plans to introduce it in the state legislative assembly on 26 May 2026. A Uniform Civil Code is a common set of laws on personal matters that applies to all citizens, regardless of religion.

The proposed law aims to regulate civil matters such as marriage, divorce, live-in relationships and the compulsory registration of marriages through a single legal framework. Tribal communities in Assam have been kept outside the bill so that their traditional customs and cultural practices are preserved.

According to the draft, the bill is structured along the lines of UCC models already seen in states such as Gujarat, Uttarakhand and Goa. This shows a wider trend of some states moving towards a common civil code at the state level.

The idea of a Uniform Civil Code is mentioned in the Indian Constitution. Article 44, which is part of the Directive Principles of State Policy, says the State shall try to secure a Uniform Civil Code for citizens. For exam aspirants, this links a current event directly to an important constitutional provision.
