Coal India Commissions 100 MW Solar Power Plant in Gujarat
Coal India Limited, a Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Coal, commissioned a 100 MW solar power plant in Gujarat from 31 March 2026, as part of its push toward becoming a net-zero energy company.
Coal India Limited (CIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, commissioned a 100 megawatt (MW) solar power project in Gujarat with effect from 31 March 2026.
The project received its official commissioning certificate from the Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), the state body that promotes renewable energy in Gujarat.
This step is part of Coal India's larger plan to move beyond coal mining and diversify into renewable energy. The company has set itself the goal of becoming a net-zero energy firm, meaning it wants to balance the energy it consumes with clean energy it produces.
Earlier, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had pointed out delays in Coal India meeting its solar energy targets. This pushed the company to speed up its renewable projects, in line with India's clean energy transition and its sustainable development goals.
For exam aspirants, note that Coal India is a 'Maharatna' PSU under the Ministry of Coal, the role of GEDA, and the idea of a net-zero energy company.
