Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate Plant to Come Up in Odisha
A Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate plant with a 2,000 tonnes-per-day capacity will be set up in Odisha by BCGCL, with L&T securing the contract, supporting India's 100 million tonne coal gasification target by 2030.
A Coal-to-Ammonium Nitrate facility is to be set up in Odisha by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL). L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Onshore has secured a major contract to establish the plant.
The facility will convert high-ash domestic coal into ammonium nitrate, a chemical used in fertilisers and industrial explosives. The plant is planned to have a production capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day.
The project supports India's broader goal of reaching 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030 under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Coal gasification turns coal into gas that can be used to make chemicals and fuels.
By using domestic coal to produce value-added products such as ammonia, methanol and synthetic natural gas, the project is expected to reduce import dependence and strengthen India's industrial and energy sectors.
