The fourth phase of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-IV) has been launched from the Rayagada district of Odisha. PMGSY is a centrally-sponsored scheme that builds all-weather roads to connect villages that do not yet have a proper road link, with a special focus on remote, hilly and tribal areas.
Under this phase, hundreds of new roads will be built to link villages that were earlier cut off from main roads. Better connectivity helps farmers move their produce to markets, allows children to reach schools, and improves access to hospitals and other public services.
Along with road construction, funds were also set aside for housing, employment generation and watershed management. The aim is to improve rural livelihoods and overall infrastructure in the region as part of a long-term development plan.
For exam aspirants, PMGSY is an important rural-development scheme. It was first launched in 2000 and comes under the Ministry of Rural Development.
