The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) marks its Incorporation Day on 17 May. It was set up on 17 May 2017 as a Section 8 non-profit company under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) observes its Incorporation Day on 17 May every year. The platform was set up on 17 May 2017 as a Section 8 (non-profit) company under the Companies Act, 2013, to run India’s national public procurement portal.
GeM works under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It is an online marketplace where central and state government departments and public sector units buy goods and services in a transparent, paperless way. The portal reduces the scope for delays and middlemen in government purchases.
Over the years GeM has helped Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs), women entrepreneurs, SC/ST-owned businesses and startups by giving them direct access to large government orders. This support strengthens local supply chains and backs the goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
For exams, remember GeM’s founding date (17 May 2017), its status as a Section 8 company, and the ministry it works under.
