Himanta Biswa Sarma was formally appointed as the Chief Minister of Assam on 11 May 2026. The appointment was made by the Governor of Assam, Lakshman Prasad Acharya, under Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India. Article 164(1) provides that the Chief Minister of a state is appointed by the Governor, and the other ministers are appointed by the Governor on the advice of the Chief Minister.

The appointment followed the results of the elections to the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. A Chief Minister takes office after a party or alliance secures a majority in the state assembly and the leader is invited by the Governor to form the government.

With this term, Sarma began a second consecutive tenure as Chief Minister of the state. The Chief Minister is the head of the state government and leads the council of ministers at the state level.

For exam aspirants, the key point is the constitutional provision involved — Article 164(1) on the appointment of the Chief Minister — and the fact that the Assam Legislative Assembly has 126 members.
