India and China held the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India–China Border Affairs (WMCC) in Beijing on 27 May 2026. The two sides reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and said they were satisfied with the progress in maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas. The Ministry of External Affairs described the discussions as “constructive and forward looking”.

The WMCC was set up in 2012 as a diplomatic mechanism to manage day-to-day issues along the India–China boundary. It played a key role in defusing tensions during the military standoff that began in eastern Ladakh in April 2020, which had taken bilateral relations to their lowest point since the 1962 border war. In October 2024, the two sides reached an understanding on disengagement at the remaining friction points, and since then both governments have taken several steps to normalise relations.

At the latest meeting, the two sides also discussed boundary delimitation, border management, mechanism-building and cross-border cooperation. The Indian side asked for an early meeting of the expert-level mechanism that handles boundary-related technical questions. The talks come as Special Representatives from the two countries have also resumed periodic meetings.

For exam aspirants, the WMCC sits alongside the Special Representatives mechanism and flag meetings between local commanders as the three main tracks for managing the LAC. The discussion is also relevant to the broader theme of India’s neighbourhood diplomacy, the post-Galwan recalibration of India–China ties and the principle of “peace and tranquillity” in the border areas as a precondition for normal bilateral engagement.
