Indian Railways is preparing to float a mega tender worth around ₹40,000 crore to procure about 100,000 freight wagons over the next three to four years. The procurement, slightly larger than a similar exercise in 2022, would involve buying roughly 35,000-40,000 wagons a year.

Freight wagons carry goods such as coal, cement, steel, and foodgrain, and expanding the fleet supports the Railways' goal of increasing its share of national freight movement. Higher freight capacity also helps reduce logistics costs across the economy.

The order is expected to benefit domestic wagon manufacturers and is in line with the government's push for capital expenditure on infrastructure to support growth and employment.
