India's First Mega Greenfield Shipyard to Be Built at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu
India's first Mega Greenfield Shipyard will come up at Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, under the India-South Korea 'VOYAGES' framework, with a planned 2.5 Million Gross Tonnage capacity and about 15,000 direct jobs.
India's first Mega Greenfield Shipyard will be developed at Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was signed on 20 April 2026 under a tripartite agreement involving HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, NSHIP-TN, and Sagarmala Finance Corporation Limited.
The shipyard was established under the India-Republic of Korea (ROK) 'VOYAGES' framework, which was taken forward during the South Korean President's state visit to India. A greenfield project is one that is built completely new on undeveloped land, rather than expanding an existing facility.
The shipyard is expected to have an annual capacity of 2.5 Million Gross Tonnage and to generate around 15,000 direct jobs. It supports the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aims to make India one of the top five shipbuilding nations in the world by greatly increasing domestic shipbuilding capacity and maritime infrastructure.
For exam aspirants, this project connects to India's maritime sector goals, the Sagarmala programme, and growing India-South Korea cooperation. Thoothukudi is an important port city on the southern coast of Tamil Nadu.
