India’s Wheat Procurement Crosses 34 Million Tonnes, Strengthening Food Buffers
India has procured 34.2 million tonnes of wheat this rabi season, above last year and near target, strengthening food buffer stocks.
The government has procured 34.2 million tonnes of wheat as of 24 May in the 2026-27 rabi marketing season, well above the 29.7 million tonnes bought in the same period a year earlier and close to the target of 34.5 million tonnes. Procurement continued strongly despite unseasonal April rains that had raised concerns about delays.
Wheat procurement is carried out by the Food Corporation of India and state agencies at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). The grain builds the central buffer stock used for the public distribution system and food-security schemes.
Stronger buffers give the government room to manage food inflation and ensure supplies for welfare programmes, which is especially important amid an energy-price flare-up linked to tensions in West Asia.
