Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Trust Accepts Resignation of Champat Rai Amid Donation Embezzlement Probe

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Trust formally accepted the resignation of General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra on July 7, 2026, citing provisions in the trust’s constitution. The decision followed growing scrutiny over alleged irregularities in the handling and counting of donations collected for the Ram Mandir construction. Trust spokesperson Govind Giri confirmed the resignations were accepted during a media briefing and acknowledged Rai’s long-standing role in the trust’s formation and operations.

The controversy stems from allegations of theft during the verification of donation records, which the trust described as a 'painful' and 'shameful' incident. Trust members have emphasized that the investigation into the matter is ongoing, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked to examine the claims. The trust has announced that a final report from the SIT is expected by July 22, 2026, when the trust will hold another review meeting.

In organizational changes, Krisha Mohan has been appointed interim General Secretary, while Govind Giri will continue as Treasurer. The trust reiterated its commitment to accountability, stating that 'theft is theft' and that all individuals involved—whether known or unknown—must face legal consequences. Eight persons have already been arrested in connection with the case, including Ramashankar Yadav (alias Tinnu), who is reportedly close to Champat Rai.
