Twin Earthquakes Devastate Venezuela; India Sends Relief Aid
Twin earthquakes (magnitude 7.5 and 7.2) struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, killing hundreds. India sent relief aid as part of a wider international response, and the UN appealed for global solidarity.
Two powerful earthquakes, of magnitude 7.5 and 7.2, struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026, killing hundreds of people and injuring thousands. By 26 June the confirmed death toll had risen sharply as rescuers searched collapsed buildings, and humanitarian agencies warned that the toll was likely to climb further, with large numbers of people still missing.
International relief began arriving quickly. India sent aid as part of its response, and rescue and relief teams from several other countries also reached Venezuela. The United Nations described it as a very complex emergency and, along with other humanitarian agencies, issued a joint appeal for global solidarity. To ease relief operations, the United States temporarily lifted several economic sanctions on Venezuela for a four-month period.
The disaster also disrupted critical infrastructure. An outage in a key power transmission line in Venezuela's central region slowed efforts to restore full operations at an important port and nearby refining and petrochemical complexes.
For aspirants, this event illustrates India's role in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) abroad, a recurring theme in India's foreign policy and its image as a "first responder" in global crises.
