The conflict in West Asia continued in late May 2026, with the United States, Iran and Israel exchanging strikes even as a fragile ceasefire remained in place. The US military said it carried out “self-defence” strikes in southern Iran on missile sites and boats laying mines, while Iran accused the US of breaking the truce and warned it was ready to respond.

Reports said negotiators were working on a framework to end the war, with Iran seeking the release of around $24 billion in frozen assets. At the same time, Israeli forces clashed with Hezbollah in eastern Lebanon, and an Israeli strike on a village there reportedly killed several people.

The fighting has affected the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow sea route near Iran through which a large share of the world’s oil passes. After the latest strikes, global oil prices jumped, and a blast was reported on a tanker off the coast of Oman.

For India, the conflict matters because it imports most of its oil through this region and a large Indian community lives and works in the Gulf countries. Rising oil prices, the safety of Indians abroad, and the security of the Strait of Hormuz are key concerns. West Asia is an important area in India’s foreign policy and energy security.
