Karnataka Launches India's First Integrated Portal to Track Substandard Medicines and Narcotic Drugs
Karnataka has launched India's first integrated digital portal to track substandard (NSQ) medicines and regulate narcotic drugs (NDPS). Built by the state drug administration, it enables instant blocking of defective drug batches and prescription-based monitoring.
On 15 May 2026, Karnataka launched India's first integrated digital monitoring portal to track Not of Standard Quality (NSQ) medicines and to regulate the sale of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS). The system was developed by the state's Food Safety and Drug Administration Department.
The portal lets drug officials immediately e-sign NSQ reports, automatically block defective drug batches from being sold, and monitor the sale of NDPS medicines through prescription verification. This makes pharmaceutical surveillance faster and harder to bypass.
Officials say the system will help prevent the misuse of controlled substances and raise safety standards in the way medicines are distributed across the state. It is being seen as an example of technology-driven governance in the health sector.
For exam aspirants: NSQ medicines are drugs that fail laboratory quality tests, while the sale of narcotic and psychotropic substances is controlled under the NDPS Act, 1985. Karnataka becoming the first state to combine both checks on a single digital platform is the key point to remember.
