Maharashtra Signs MoUs for 25,400 MW Nuclear Power Worth ₹6.5 Lakh Crore
Maharashtra signed MoUs with NTPC, Adani Power, Reliance Industries and Lalitpur Power to build 25,400 MW of nuclear power capacity worth about ₹6.5 lakh crore, using Bharat Small Reactors and Small Modular Reactors.
Maharashtra has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with four leading companies to develop 25,400 megawatts (MW) of nuclear power capacity in the state. The projects carry a total planned investment of about ₹6.5 lakh crore, making it one of the largest clean-energy pushes announced by any Indian state.
The four companies involved are NTPC Limited, Adani Power, Reliance Industries Limited and Lalitpur Power Generation Company. The plans include advanced nuclear technologies such as Bharat Small Reactors and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) — smaller, factory-built reactors that are easier to set up than large conventional plants. Major projects are planned in Ratnagiri district and other regions.
Nuclear power produces electricity without burning fossil fuels, so it releases very little carbon dioxide. Expanding nuclear capacity helps India meet its rising power demand while reducing dependence on coal. The state expects these projects to create a large number of jobs during construction and operation.
The move supports India’s long-term goal of energy security and its commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. It also reflects a shift towards involving private companies in nuclear power, an area that was earlier limited mainly to government bodies.
For exam aspirants, remember the figures: 25,400 MW capacity, about ₹6.5 lakh crore investment, the state is Maharashtra, and the technologies highlighted are Bharat Small Reactors and Small Modular Reactors.
