Centre May Use Armed Forces for NEET-UG Re-examination Logistics on 21 June 2026

The Union government is considering using the armed forces to assist in conducting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduate medical admissions (NEET-UG) re-examination scheduled for 21 June 2026 — the first time any national entrance examination would draw on the armed forces in this manner. The exercise is meant to ensure a secure and error-free re-test for more than 22 lakh students, after the original NEET-UG was cancelled following allegations of paper leak and malpractice.

A high-level review meeting was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at his residence on 28 May 2026 and was attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, senior ministers, and top officials of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Education Ministry. The meeting examined the entire examination chain, from question-paper setting and printing to transportation, security, and last-mile delivery.

Officials clarified that the armed forces’ role would be limited to logistics: secure transportation of question papers, especially by the Indian Air Force in case of adverse weather such as heavy rain or storms, and emergency contingency support. Several other arms of the government — Ministry of Home Affairs, state governments, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Postal Department, civil aviation and the Ministry of External Affairs — are also cooperating with the NTA to deliver the re-examination.

For exam aspirants, the episode underscores how NEET-UG is administered by NTA under the Ministry of Education, the role of constitutional bodies and inter-ministerial coordination in conducting large nationwide exams, and the wider debate on examination integrity that has led to reforms such as the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
