The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to involve the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in reviewing the designs of major bridges to be built on national highways in all new projects. The initiative was announced on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

The aim is to ensure that major bridges, which are designed for a service life of 100 years or more, go through a rigorous and independent technical review before construction begins. Around 12 IITs, including IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Roorkee and IIT-Kharagpur, have expressed willingness to work with NHAI on this task.

Under the proposed framework, the empanelled institutions will examine structural design calculations, engineering drawings, construction methods, geotechnical investigations and hydraulic studies before work starts. The framework will apply uniformly to projects built under different models, including Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) and Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), creating a consistent quality-assurance system.

The move follows a directive from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways asking all road-owning agencies, including state public works departments, to complete a nationwide digital inventory of bridges by September 30 under the Indian Bridge Management System (IBMS). Together, these steps aim to strengthen the safety and durability of India's road infrastructure.

For aspirants, the development is relevant to governance and infrastructure topics. It shows how public agencies are partnering with premier technical institutions to improve accountability and engineering standards, an example of institution-building that often appears in questions on schemes, bodies and infrastructure.
