A seminar on Sustainable Spice Value Chains was held in Kochi, Kerala. It was organised by the Consulate General of the Netherlands and the World Spice Organisation. The event focused on making the spice industry more sustainable while meeting European rules on food safety, quality standards and traceability.
India is one of the most important countries in the global spice trade. It exports more than 250 varieties of spices and value-added products to over 180 countries. Maintaining high quality and safety standards is essential to keep these export markets open.
The seminar also reviewed the progress of the National Sustainable Spices Programme (NSSP). This programme supports sustainable farming practices among thousands of farmers who grow spices such as chilli, turmeric, coriander, cumin and pepper.
