Status of ₹2000 Banknote Withdrawal — Over 98% Returned
The RBI’s periodic update shows the vast majority of withdrawn ₹2000 notes have returned to the banking system; the note remains legal tender.
The Reserve Bank of India continues to publish periodic updates on the withdrawal of the ₹2000 denomination banknote, which it announced in May 2023. The note remains legal tender, but the RBI had stopped issuing it and asked the public to deposit or exchange the notes.
The facility to deposit or exchange ₹2000 notes at bank branches was available until October 2023, after which exchange continued at RBI issue offices. The central bank periodically reports the value of notes still with the public, and the overwhelming majority of the notes by value have already returned to the banking system.
The withdrawal was part of the RBI's 'Clean Note Policy'. The ₹2000 note had been introduced in November 2016 after demonetisation to quickly restore currency in circulation, and its withdrawal reflects that this objective had been met.
