Union Cabinet Approves Modernisation of Nagpur International Airport Under PPP Model
The Union Cabinet has approved modernising Nagpur International Airport under a PPP model, with GMR-led GNIAL operating it for 30 years and capacity to be raised to 30 million passengers a year.
The Union Cabinet has approved the modernisation of Nagpur International Airport, officially known as Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The approval was given by extending the lease period of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) land that was granted to MIHAN India Limited.
Under the plan, the airport will be operated by GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL) for a concession period of 30 years. A PPP model means a private company runs and upgrades a public facility for a fixed number of years, while the asset continues to belong to the government.
The modernisation aims to raise the airport's capacity to handle up to 30 million passengers every year and to strengthen cargo and logistics services in the Vidarbha region. The airport is a key part of the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project, one of central India's largest infrastructure developments.
For exam aspirants, this decision is an example of how the government uses the PPP route to upgrade public infrastructure. It also links to topics such as the role of the Airports Authority of India and the development of regional aviation hubs.
